Data Communications - NTT Announces 5 Trillion Yen Fiber-Optic Upgrade

According to a Nikkei report, NTT is pushing forward with plans to upgrade 30 million residential and office lines to fiber-optic lines by 2010. NTT's decision is expected to further stimulate use of videophones and video transmission services over the Internet, as well as make possible the development of broadband-compatible televisions.
The anticipated cost for NTT's fiber-optic upgrade project is more than 5 trillion yen (US$46.8 billion; US$1 = 106.8 Yen), and the scope of the project will cover about half of the nation's fixed-line telephone subscribers.
